About :

Would you reroute a train to run over one person to prevent it from running over five others? In the classic “Trolley Problem” survey, most people say they would. But I wanted to test what people would actually do in a real-life situation. In the world’s first realistic simulation of this controversial moral dilemma, unsuspecting subjects will be forced to make what they believe is a life-or-death decision.

Want to discuss this episode (or anything else) with me? I've started a thread on the Vsauce subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/vsauce/comments/7iogcp/im_michael_stevens_ask_me_about_mind_field_or/

Thanks for watching and thanks for supporting educational content at this scale! Mind Field has allowed me to build a talented team to go beyond my usual and design tests and trials to explore ideas with researchers in the field. Hopefully some of our observations can lead to bigger and better studies!

For those of you who noticed some discontinuities in the edit, good catch! Unlike Vsauce, I don't edit Mind Field. For some reason, an editor hired to make this episode decided to stretch out Corey's decision-moment to make it last longer by inserting footage from AFTER he'd pulled the switch. I'm disappointed I didn't notice this earlier and disappointed that an editor thought this was appropriate. Obviously, I would have NO interest in not doing this for real, so the fact that this is making some people think it's "fake" is really disappointing as well. I'm talking with YouTube Red and the production company about releasing the raw, uncut footage of Corey's experience.

The first four episodes (and bonus footage!) are available to watch NOW. The next four and more bonus footage will be coming out over the next four weeks. Stay curious, and as always, thanks for watching!

Follow up study: choose to propel a person at either one or five trains?

And then launched their remains at either one or five Michaels? Would he lose? Or would he laugh?

those people who got screened out will all turn the lever because of their human nature. This experiment purposely chose people who are more resilient, therefore, the result is biased and 4 out of 6 didn't want to take the blame.

DISCLAIMER. This is a entertainment show ! NO SCIENCE HERE !!!

The acting is painfully obvious with the "cory" character, less obvious with the first girl and the psychologist. Watch it again and pay attention, you will notice little things. All the others seemed genuine test subjects to me, though, and this is consistent with the fact that they all reacted in the same way, which is to not do anything they could be found accountable and punished for.

Very few people fit the "hero" personality (2% if I remember correctly) which is to put others above their own well being, and act selflessly to save others. That's why they probably faked the other two, to have something other than just passive bystanders, which wouldn't have made for a good show.

If you don't pull the switch, you are still responsible for the 5 deaths and nothing is different. So, let's ask the question with this new information.
Would you rather kill 1 person or kill 5 people?

I think this is something that would’ve made less people pick save the five people (if you told this IRL). You could say if you chose to kill the one person you would be sent to jail for 20 years for “attempted murder”. The actor could’ve played this in easily by saying ‘if one person is hurt or killed because of me turning the tracks I would get sent to prison for 20 years by the police however, if a group of people were killed it would be blamed on the train station.’ . Thanks!

I'd like this in a game. But not a telltale game. Sure, it doesn't give the real feeling, but that's good if you don't want the game to be tagged as psychological horror.

regarding the ppv series: charge for videos, block comments, your actions are completely against the persona you're building for years. sometimes masks just get on the way of the public. good video though, that's why this is so enraging.

Explain to me how there's nobody sitting by the desk at 27:10 .. But at 27:14 you see the lady with the red shirt, then at 27:16 2 seconds later she gets up and starts moving? Play the video at .25x speed to notice the difference.

this was really hard to watch for me. my dad is a train engineer and he’s killed some people because they were on the tracks and he couldnt stop the train and it has really broken him. when that guy at the end started crying, i was crying with him. it’s tough being helpless or near helpless in a situation where lives are on the line. good episode but i personally wish i would’ve steered clear of this

Pull the lever when the train is on the switch so the train derails and barrels in a completely uncontrollable direction.

Alright, I was 43 seconds in, and I already disagree. I don't know what legendary sneezes you're having, but this has never happened to me. My eyes close sure, but not fully; and if I was going 70 mph and I thought "holy shit, this might be the one" and crash my car, I would just slow down or keep my car on cruise control. But in all seriousness, if you die by sneezing, I'm sorry, that's just natural selection - we don't need you.

The ones who pulled the lever don't realize that they would've been charged for manslaughter had the test been real. Inaction is by far the most rational choice all things considered for this scenario

I think there is a third option, fliping the switch 50 times so the train crashes

I'd say make it so that there is a minimum in death, while maintaining the safety of the safe areas. Thereby, it maintains that if you aren't reckless, you will be okay.

What about switching the lever while the train is on that section? I have no knowledge of what would happen then. Would the train derail so that all workers may notice and run away, leaving only the train operator at risk of injury? Or would the chaos just do more harm then potential help? Can those levers even be operated when trains are right on the section?

Adam Thacker . 2017-12-12
And what if the only way to pull the lever was to do it by hand and you would have to get out and stop just to do it, what if you had no choice what would you do then, if you wanna see what people would do you must go as planed to make them choose, beacuse there are instance where stuff like that happens..
